Clinical: Body cavities
3.1 Please advise on dosages of OMNIPAQUE for oral GI - follow through studies for adults.
The SPC for OMNIPAQUE, section 4.2 "Posology and method of administration", table on guidelines for body cavities, lists a recommended dosage for all oral examinations of the gastrointestinal tract in adults is 180, or 350 mgI/ml, at individual volumes, depending on the nature of the examination and the size of the patient. Since OMNIPAQUE, unlike ionic HOCM, has very little taste of its own, it can be diluted with water for oral studies. For imaging of the distal parts of the GI tract following oral application of OMNIPAQUE the main factors influencing bowel transit time are the condition of the patient and presence of any bowel content. Contrast media increase the rate of passage proportionally to their osmolality. The optimal time for imaging of distal part of the GI tract after oral administration of OMNIPAQUE is not known and will vary between individual patients.
3.2 Can OMNIPAQUE be administered rectally?
Rectal use of OMNIPAQUE falls under the licensed indication for use in body cavities, both in conventional X-ray and CT – see SPC section 4.2 for dosage.
It is often used if perforation is suspected, as OMNIPAQUE is sterile, low osmolar and has a minimal effect on the peritoneum.
Additionally, compared to HOCM, LOCM have been shown to exert less osmotic effect on the smaller and more sensitive GI tract in children.
